PROCESSING THE DATA

CODING

The standard classification and code structure for 'Sources of income' are provided in the coding section of the 'Total income' standard.

'Sources of income' is collected at a broad level in the Short income module, at a narrower level in the Basic income module and comprehensively in the Detailed income module used in the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Survey of Income and Housing (SIH) and the Household Expenditure Survey (HES).

Standard input categories

The Detailed income module, used in the SIH and the HES, collects a separate value for each source of income allowing input at the desired level of the classification.

The Basic income module collects 'Sources of income' data in enough detail to support input at the broad and narrow levels of the classification, but not the detailed level. The following tables map the response categories in the Basic question module to the broad and narrow levels of the classification in the classification criteria section of the 'Total income' standard.

Responses to question 1 in the Short income module can be mapped directly to the standard classification at the broad level, with the exception of response category 4, 'Any other regular source?', which maps to the broad source '9 Other income'.
